Fire Escape Inspection Services
Fire escapes on existing multi-unit buildings must be inspected by a qualified structural engineer to safeguard occupants and firefighters. Whether or not they require repairs, fire escapes must be inspected and certified every five years.
Section 1028.6 of the International Fire Code, New Jersey edition requires any fire escape or exterior stairway found in a state of deterioration to be repaired immediately.
Licensed engineers at Tadco Solutions
specialize in fire escape inspections and/or load test services to implement corrective actions, if needed. Upon completion, Tadco will then issue an evaluation report to include a summary of the structures examined and any recommendations to bring them into compliance.
Tadco’s fire escape inspection includes a thorough examination of:
- Bolts, angles or other structural connections and components
- All treads, platform supports, and rail posts
- Cement or thru bolt connections
- Material loss due to corrosion
- Internal rust in any connection and/or joint
- All surfaces to ensure they are properly coated
- All mechanical parts (i.e., pulleys, drop down ladders
- Existing or new non-iron (i.e., timber) structures, which also qualify as fire escape material
Fire Escape Load Test
Depending on the fire escape’s structural condition, a load test might be necessary according to New Jersey Uniform Construction Code requirements. A permit from the Construction Department may be required to do the repairs.
